10 Questions with Professional Photographer Sam T'ang

Stephanie: You’ve had great success as a photographer – Did you choose this career – or did it choose you?

Sam: My background and education is in Architecture and Interior Design. Photography has always been an interest of mine but I was never formally trained or educated and just happened to fall into this career by accident.

Stephanie:
Describe your favorite shoot so far.

Sam: There's been quite a few. I enjoy being in the studio and have been extremely fortunate and blessed to shoot in exotic locations such as Jamaica, Mexico, Puerto Rico, the Bahamas, Cayman Islands, Virgin Islands, Costa Rica, Hawaii and the extreme opposite at the "Ice Hotel" north of Fairbanks, Alaska! It was 30 Degrees F outside and 20 Degrees F inside the Ice Hotel....brrrr...

Stephanie:  What's your favorite music to work to in the studio and what are you listening to right now?

Sam: Music is very important on my photo shoots and I try to have upbeat/up-tempo dance/techno/pop music while shooting. I am currently listening to a Deep Dish Chill-out/techno mix.

Stephanie: You’ve worked with the world’s most beautiful women. As a photographer – what do you need your subjects to bring to the shoot?

Sam: A good night's rest and "Beauty" sleep before any shoot!

Stephanie:
What advice would you give someone who wants to follow in your footsteps?

Sam: Keep shooting. Learn the "Technical Aspects" of photography and well as the Visual. Become an assistant to a photographer, watch, learn, apply and don't step on anyone's toes.

Stephanie: Any advice you should have taken but didn’t?

Sam: Assisting another Professional photographer. I was self taught and learned the hard way by trial and error.

Stephanie: Tell me something you used to worry about that you don’t anymore? And something about Sam T'ang that people would be surprised to know.

Sam: I used to worry about having good weather to shoot or having a good makeup artist.

People would be surprised that I can do makeup as good if not better than some of the makeup artists. I also produced and hosted Bikini Pageants and Model Searches for Venus Swimwear finding one International Winner and have placed in the Top 5 and Top 10 with my title holders for 7 consecutive years!

Stephanie: What has life taught you so far?

Sam: I believe that everything happens for a reason. Life is too short and you should cherish and live life to the fullest each day. Stop worrying and stressing and just be happy!

Stephanie: Do you have a daily ritual – something you do each day without fail?

Sam: Take my vitamins and supplements and play with my little 5 lb Pomeranian -- Gabbana.

Stephanie:  If you could sit down with anyone – past, present, or future – who would it be, what would you talk about, and what’s for dinner?

Sam: I would be having sushi with Leonardo Da Vinci. We would talk about his thoughts and views of modern day science and technology, concepts in renewable energy, cars, planes and motorcycles. A new modern day "Mona Lisa" captured through photography or motion picture.

Stephanie: Everyone is looking for “peace” – tell me what that means to you and how you find your peace?

Sam: Peace to me is the absence of conflict and/or tranquility and quietness.

I find peace by riding my motorcycle on winding and twisting country roads with no traffic and laying on the beach, having a margarita and hearing the sounds of ocean after a shoot.
